Spain triumphed over Croatia with a decisive 3-0 victory in their Euro 2024 Group B opener. History was made as Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, at just 16 years old, became the youngest player in the competition’s history. Meanwhile, Atlético de Madrid’s Alvaro Morata became the third-highest all-time goalscorer in the European Championship, behind Michel Platini and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

Spain opened the scoring in the 29th minute when Alvaro Morata found the net following an incisive through-ball from Fabian Ruiz. Just three minutes later, Fabian Ruiz himself twisted and turned in the opposition box before rifling home the second goal. The La Roja boys extended their lead to three goals before half-time when Lamine Yamal’s left-footed cross curled inwards, finding Dani Carvajal, who scored his first international goal just weeks after netting in the Champions League final at Wembley.

Despite a barrage of chances from the Luka Modric-led Croatian team in the second half, they were unable to capitalize. In the last 10 minutes of the game, Croatia was awarded a penalty after Rodri fouled Bruno Petković, who had an open goal to tap into. However, Spain’s goalkeeper Unai Simon saved the penalty. Croatia thought they had scored through a tap-in by Petković, assisted by Ivan Perišić, but the goal was ruled out after VAR detected an infringement by Perišić in the penalty box

Fabian Ruiz was awarded the player of the match after putting up an impressive performance bagging a goal and an assist.

Spain will look to continue their impressive run when they meet Italy on June 20th, while Croatia will aim to redeem themselves against Albania on June 19th.
